A Mystery 1977 Eisenhower Small Dollar

During the later years of producing the Eisenhower Dollar, the U. S. Mint began to contemplate changing the dollar coin to a smaller size. There exists a vintage photograph of an apparent small-format, decagon shaped (10-sided), 1977 dated Eisenhower Dollar pattern piece.

Susan B Anthony was eventually chosen as the theme for the new small dollars issued in 1979. Instead of being decagon shaped, the Susan B Anthony dollar is round and has an 11-sided inner rim. 1979 was the 10th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. It has been speculated that this is the likely reason for the 11-sided inner rim.

Daniel Carr, of Moonlight Mint, has struck some small size Ike Dollars similar to the Mystery 1977 Dollar above. They were over-struck on genuine U. S. Mint Susan B Anthony Dollars of 1979-1980, and Presidential Dollars of 2007-2020. In addition he has struck some "1970", "1975", and "1979" dated Eisenhower Dollars over-struck on genuine Ike Dollars from 1971-1978.
