A Susan B. Anthony Dollar Replacement? |
Well, sort of. These medals were
included in the 1982 proof sets as a replacement for the Susan B.
Anthony Dollar. Back in 1981, when production of the ill-fated
Susan B. Anthony dollar was abruptly discontinued, the mint had
already ordered the proof set holders for 1982. To make use of
these holders, it was decided to insert a medal in the 1982 proof
sets to fill the hole where the SBA dollar had been the previous
year. The Mint struck these proof medals on brass cent stock in
the same diameter as the dollar. The 1982 proof sets were the
only ones to include this medal. These medals are the only proof
medals struck by the U.S. Mint not intended for individual sale.
Mintage: 3,857,479.
